Look at this! And this! And don’t forget about that! That’s what your brain sounds like when it’s struggling to ignore distractions and disorganisation. Is it any wonder, then, that it’s nearly impossible to be productive if your environment is cluttered?
Clutter can also release cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body, because chaos is perceived by the brain as a genuine source of stress. Over time, this can develop into heightened mental health issues, such as depression.
Of course, this isn’t true for everyone. Some individuals are perfectly able to exist in cluttered spaces without (seemingly) being affected by it – those who’re more creative, for example. But if your brain is sending you signals that clutter in your environment is causing you anxiety, there are tried and trusted ways to manage it.
1. Be patient
Whatever type of clutter it is, the best way to approach it is to take it bit by bit, methodically making progress until the job is completed. Set yourself a deadline and a goal, and don’t stop until you’re done.
2. Don’t be afraid to throw things out
If you struggle to let go of things that serve no purpose in your life, start by addressing any relevant emotional factors. Again, take it one step at a time, and consult a professional if necessary.
3. Be clever with storage
Once you’ve thrown out the things that don’t add value to your life, it’s time to organise those you want to keep. Use labels, storage containers, baskets, shelves and files – these make it easier to find things when you need them.
4. Breathe
Believe it or not, clutter can cause physical reactions. Take a deep breath to relax your body. Then, count to eight, breathing out, and then to eight again, breathing in. Repeat a few times, as necessary.
Bottom line
Mostly, you’re the only one who can do something about your environment, and the part it plays in your anxiety. Declutter sooner rather than later, and watch your levels of anxiety plummet.
