Returning to work after the holidays can be tough, especially if you’ve been in a bit of a rut. It’s completely natural to go through phases of feeling unmotivated, but, thankfully, there are ways to reignite your love for your job.

01. Unlock your creativity

Even if you have an incredible job – let’s say you’re in charge of developing new flavours for Häagen-Dazs ice cream, you get to work with great people AND you get paid a fortune – if you’ve been doing the same thing every day for years, it can become very boring. Expanding your knowledge base can open up an array of possibilities that will refresh your approach. Attending seminars or courses, reading books related to your industry, or networking with professionals who have different perspectives and experiences, can inspire you and spark ideas that may reignite your love for your work.

02. Set goals for yourself

Having targets that you’re working towards gives you something to focus on and strive for. They don’t have to be huge, long-term goals – smaller achievements can be enough to give you a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Write down what you’re hoping to achieve and break it down into measurable tasks. This will make it easier to track your progress and stay motivated on the journey.

03. Find ways to enjoy yourself

According to entrepreneur Richard Branson, one of the most important and underrated ingredients in any successful venture is having fun while you’re doing it. If you’re part of a team, schedule games nights or trivia quizzes, solve puzzles together, put together an office playlist for heightened productivity and morale, and let your creative juices flow. Celebrate your accomplishments and reward yourself, when appropriate.

04. Network with others in your field

By building relationships with other professionals in your field, you’ll learn new things, stay current on industry trends and recharge your mindset. When you’re feeling drained or bored, they’ll understand what you’re going through and will be able to offer advice and support. If you work remotely, try joining a co-working space or share offices with other remote workers, so you’re surrounded with productivity, creativity and discipline.’

05. Take time away from work every now and then

Finally, don’t feel guilty for stepping away from your desk for a few hours – sometimes taking a break provides clarity on issues that were previously difficult or overwhelming. And make time to get away from work entirely. Spend time in nature and with your family, and remind yourself why you do what you do.

Everyone feels bored, disillusioned or demotivated from time to time – even ice cream people. By stepping back and re-evaluating, you’ll find ways to love work again.
