Gender-based violence (or GBV) means any kind of hurtful actions by men against women, and by women against men. It can affect anybody – of any race, age or community.

Gender-based violence is often physical – that means beating, hitting or killing. But these are also types of GBV:

  • Rape, sexual abuse or forced prostitution
  • Any type of sex with a child
  • Harmful words that make women feel helpless
  • Any harmful actions in the family
  • Child marriage, forced marriage, circumcision of girls, and marriage to more than one person

Violence against women is a major problem in South Africa, but there are laws that protect women.
