Gender-based violence (or GBV) means any kind of hurtful actions by men against women, and by women against men. It can affect anybody – of any race, age or community.
Gender-based violence is often physical – that means beating, hitting or killing. But these are also types of GBV:
- Rape, sexual abuse or forced prostitution
- Any type of sex with a child
- Harmful words that make women feel helpless
- Any harmful actions in the family
- Child marriage, forced marriage, circumcision of girls, and marriage to more than one person
Violence against women is a major problem in South Africa, but there are laws that protect women.
