Gender-based violence (or GBV) means any kind of hurtful actions by men against women, and by women against men. It can affect anybody – of any race, age or community.

 Do you believe that:

  • If someone hits you because they’re jealous, it means they love you?
  • Shouting, screaming or swearing at someone you love just means you’re passionate?
  • It’s not rape if you say “I love you”?

It’s not true, it is abuse

When we keep hearing lies like this, the problem of gender-based violence never stops. Children see this abuse and think it is normal, so the vio- lence goes on.

How can we stop this?

  • We need to speak We can’t let bad things keep happening when we know it’s hurting someone.
  • We need to tell our children that hitting a person, screaming at them and forcing them to do things is wrong.
  • We need to treat each other with respect and kindness, so our children don’t learn bad behaviours from us.
