Imminent deadlines, long hours, projects not going according to plan – the workplace can be a source of tremendous anxiety. According to a survey conducted by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, 40% of respondents reported persistent stress or excessive anxiety linked to their jobs.

When we’re unable to deal with our anxiety in the workplace, we’re likely to find it difficult performing at work. Forgetfulness, an inability to focus, taking more sick days, not feeling well or not meeting deadlines are all common symptoms. It’s important to learn how to cope with the anxiety, so that it doesn’t affect your performance.

01. Speak up

Once you’ve recognised that you’re experiencing workplace anxiety, it can help to speak to someone about it – a supervisor, a colleague or a family member. Having honest discussions about it will help you to understand it better, and this makes it easier for the those around you to support you.

02. Make the most of your time

When you’re at work, try to use the time as well as you can. Set yourself working times and deadlines, and avoid distractions that can prevent you from working efficiently. Stick to those hours and, outside of them, give your brain a good break.

03. Work within your limits

Once you’ve identified what is causing you anxiety, try to limit what you take on, so that you don’t exacerbate the situation. For example, if you’re already working on a project that is stressful, don’t agree to another until the first one has been resolved. Once the project has been completed, take the time to celebrate it and allow your brain to enjoy the success that comes with hard work. In addition, avoid bringing work home with you, so that your brain has a chance to recharge after you’ve left the office.

04. Be good to your body

You’ll be able to deal with anxiety better if your body is strong. Get enough sleep, control stress, consume enough nutrients, get enough exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with your loved ones. Try to limit your intake of alcohol and sugar. Also, be kind to yourself. If you’re showing up every day and doing your best, you have more than enough to be proud of.
