Is it any wonder, then, that it\u2019s nearly impossible to be productive if your environment is cluttered?<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\">Clutter can also release\u00a0<strong data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"25\">cortisol<\/strong>\u00a0(the stress hormone) in the body, because chaos is perceived by the brain as a genuine source of stress. Over time, this can develop into heightened mental health issues, such as depression.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">Of course, this isn\u2019t true for everyone. Some individuals are perfectly able to exist in cluttered spaces without (seemingly) being affected by it \u2013 those who\u2019re more creative, for example. But if your brain is sending you signals that clutter in your environment is causing you anxiety, there are tried and trusted ways to manage it.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\"><strong>1. Be patient<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Whatever type of clutter it is, the best way to approach it is to take it bit by bit, methodically making progress until the job is completed. Set yourself a deadline and a goal, and don\u2019t stop until you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"7\"><strong>2. Don\u2019t be afraid to throw things out<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">If you struggle to let go of things that serve no purpose in your life, start by addressing any relevant emotional factors. Again, take it one step at a time, and consult a professional if necessary.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\"><strong>3. Be clever with storage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">Once you\u2019ve thrown out the things that don\u2019t add value to your life, it\u2019s time to organise those you want to keep. Use labels, storage containers, baskets, shelves and files \u2013 these make it easier to find things when you need them.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"11\"><strong>4. Breathe<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">Believe it or not, clutter can cause physical reactions. Take a deep breath to relax your body. Then, count to eight, breathing out, and then to eight again, breathing in. Repeat a few times, as necessary.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"14\"><strong>Bottom line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\">Mostly, you\u2019re the only one who can do something about your environment, and the part it plays in your anxiety.
