For some, it may be now and then (just part of life), while others may live with an anxiety disorder, where feelings of anxiety are persistent, and affect their quality of life. When you\u2019re feeling anxious:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Name the emotion and sensation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Does it cause you to feel overwhelmed or worried? Are you feeling frightened or helpless? It sometimes helps to write it down. Add to the list what you\u2019re feeling physically: heart racing, fluttering stomach, sweating, nausea, for example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t react; just accept<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t really help to deny it or fight it. Usually, it\u2019s an indication that your subconscious is dealing with something difficult, and accepting the reality will bring you closer to managing it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get curious<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the root of anxiety lies in childhood, or it\u2019s tied to a traumatic experience you may have suppressed. If you take time to examine your feelings, you may be able to pinpoint the cause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manage your lifestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Avoiding triggers such as alcohol and drugs, managing stress, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, eating well and drinking enough water can all make a big difference. Other anxiety management mechanisms include journalling, getting outside, listening to relaxing music and deep breathing. You know yourself best. Try to incorporate positive practices into your day, such as gardening, walking, being creative or cooking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bottom line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, society is getting better at understanding anxiety.
