It just seems like a time to offer a bit of perspective and context as we continue to grapple with the Coronavirus pandemic worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>People do die<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is an inescapable reality that dying is part of living. This is, of course, obvious. We state it here because in these modern times it sometimes seems like we are not willing to accept death. In the last period of time have we not heard things like \u201cno avoidable deaths\u201d,\u00a0 \u201cnobody will be left behind\u201d, and \u201cnobody needs to die\u201d etc?! But people do die. All the time. It will come to each of us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We know what kills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is good data on worldwide mortality. At a big-picture level we can be quite clear on what are the biggest killers on the planet and here are the top 5 killers of adults in 2020:<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 478px;\" width=\"412\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\"><strong>Condition<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"318\"><strong>Deaths in 2019<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\"><strong>Heart disease<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"318\">9m<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\"><strong>Stroke<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"318\">6m<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\"><strong>Emphysema<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"318\">3m<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\"><strong>Respiratory infections<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"318\">3m<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\"><strong>Covid-19 (approximate deaths 2020)<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"318\">3m<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Data is from WHO reports, rounded-off to nearest million. Cardiovascular disease remains, by far, the biggest killer worldwide. Lifestyle changes like eating better and moving more can reduce cardiovascular risk greatly.
