Structurally, it is a relatively complicated joint, adapted for movement, support and stability of the body. Injuries of the knee are relatively common.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Predisposing factors:<\/strong>\u00a0 A number of factors can predispose people to knee problems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Obesity:<\/em><\/strong> Excessive weight bearing increases the probability of injury or degeneration.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Overuse.<\/em><\/strong> Ongoing repetitive activity or exercise, particularly with poor technique or footwear.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Previous injury<\/em><\/strong> of the joint may heal with some scarring, instability or misalignment, which may create problems later.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Compensating.<\/em><\/strong> An injury or deformity in a joint of the leg or in the spine may cause a person to compensate for pain or imbalance by developing an abnormal gait (way of walking). This increases the risk of developing knee or ankle problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Chronic conditions<\/em><\/strong> like rheumatoid arthritis, gout and lupus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Anatomy.<\/strong> The knee is a hinge joint formed by the junction of three bones &#8211; the femur (thigh bone), the tibia (shin bone), and the patella (kneecap). The femur and tibia are separated by two spongy disks (menisci), and strongly held together by the collateral ligaments on the sides and the cruciate ligaments within the joint. The quadriceps muscle (thigh) connects via the quadriceps tendon to the patella which in turn is joined to the tibia by the patellar tendon. The ends of the bones and the back of the patella are covered by smooth cartilage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Common knee problems<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cartilage Injuries and Disorders<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Chondromalacia<\/em><\/strong> (or chondromalacia patellae) is a softening of the articular cartilage on the back of the patella, caused by rubbing against the lower femur. It may be caused by trauma, overuse, muscle weakness, or excessive inward rolling of the foot (pronation). This causes a dull pain around or under the kneecap that worsens when the knee bears weight as it is straightened (like when walking down stairs). It is common in runners (runner\u2019s knee) and is also seen in cyclists and soccer players. <a class=\"fusion-modal-text-link\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.chon\" href=\"#\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treatment<\/span><\/strong><\/a><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-1 chon\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:#ebebeb;--awb-background:#f6f6f6;\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-sm\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-1\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Chondromalacia<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">Involves a programme of low-impact exercises that strengthen the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles. Occasionally arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery is required to smooth the surface of the articular cartilage.<\/div><div class=\"modal-footer\"><button class=\"fusion-button button-default button-medium button default medium\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\">Close<\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Meniscus injuries<\/em><\/strong> occur when the knee is rotated while bearing weight (like turning to hit a tennis ball), leading to a tear in the tissue of the meniscus. This gives rise to pain, particularly when the knee is straightened, and later, swelling. After the injury the knee may click, lock, or feel weak. <a class=\"fusion-modal-text-link\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.meni\" href=\"#\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treatment<\/span><\/strong><\/a><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-2 meni\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:#ebebeb;--awb-background:#f6f6f6;\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-sm\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-2\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Meniscus injuries<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">If the tear is minor and the symptoms go away, a muscle strengthening programme, under the guidance of a skilled physiotherapist, will help. If the tear is more extensive, surgery may be required to repair the tear, followed by a rehabilitation programme.<\/div><div class=\"modal-footer\"><button class=\"fusion-button button-default button-medium button default medium\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\">Close<\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Osteoarthritis of the Knee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a degenerative (wear and tear) disease where joint cartilage gradually wears away, causing pain, swelling, and a decrease in motion. A common symptom is morning stiffness that lessens after activity. Sometimes the knee joint locks or clicks on bending or straightening. <a class=\"fusion-modal-text-link\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.oste\" href=\"#\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/span><\/a><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-3 oste\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-3\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:#ebebeb;--awb-background:#f6f6f6;\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-sm\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-3\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Osteoarthritis of the Knee<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">Analgesics (pain-killers), anti-inflammatory drugs and exercises to restore joint movement and strengthen the knee are important, as is losing excess weight. Seriously damaged joints may require joint replacement surgery.<\/div><div class=\"modal-footer\"><button class=\"fusion-button button-default button-medium button default medium\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\">Close<\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ligament Injuries <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Cruciate Ligaments.<\/em><\/strong> The anterior cruciate ligament is usually injured by a sudden twisting motion. The posterior cruciate is usually injured by direct impact. Cruciate ligament injuries may not always cause pain &#8211; a \u201cpopping\u201d sound and buckling of the leg on weight-bearing may be experienced. <a class=\"fusion-modal-text-link\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.cruc\" href=\"#\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treatment<\/span><\/strong><\/a><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-4 cruc\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-4\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:#ebebeb;--awb-background:#f6f6f6;\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-sm\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-4\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Cruciate Ligaments<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">For an incomplete tear, an exercise programme to strengthen surrounding muscles is important. A knee brace during activity is also helpful. A completely torn anterior cruciate ligament often requires surgery, followed by an extended exercise and rehabilitation programme.<\/div><div class=\"modal-footer\"><button class=\"fusion-button button-default button-medium button default medium\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\">Close<\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Collateral Ligaments.<\/em><\/strong> These are most often caused by a blow to the side of the knee that stretches and tears the ligament on the opposite side of the knee, which may buckle sideways, with pain and swelling. The knee joint may become unstable. Minor tears often heal within 2 \u2013 4 weeks with a prescribed exercise programme. Ice packs may help to reduce initial pain and swelling, and a knee brace can help to stabilise the knee. The tendon may become inflamed or tear after repeated stress. <a class=\"fusion-modal-text-link\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.pate\" href=\"#\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treatment<\/span><\/strong><\/a><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-5 pate\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-5\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:#ebebeb;--awb-background:#f6f6f6;\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-sm\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-5\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Patellar Tendonitis<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">Treatment for tendonitis involves rest, elevation and ice packs over the area. Anti-inflammatory drugs may help to relieve pain, inflammation and swelling.<\/div><div class=\"modal-footer\"><button class=\"fusion-button button-default button-medium button default medium\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\">Close<\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Osgood-Schlatter Disease<\/em><\/strong> is caused by repetitive stress (like frequent running and jumping) on the growth area (apophysis) of the upper tibia, at the point where the patellar tendon attaches. It commonly occurs in active children between 10 and 15 years old, and is characterised by pain and inflammation of the patellar tendon and surrounding soft tissues. <a class=\"fusion-modal-text-link\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.osgood\" href=\"#\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treatment<\/span><\/strong><\/a><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-6 osgood\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-6\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:#ebebeb;--awb-background:#f6f6f6;\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-sm\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-6\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Osgood-Schlatter Disease<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">Initially, avoid activity, and apply ice to the knee to relieve inflammation. Stretching and strengthening the thigh muscles may help.<\/div><div class=\"modal-footer\"><button class=\"fusion-button button-default button-medium button default medium\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\">Close<\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITB) <\/em><\/strong>is an inflammatory condition caused by friction (rubbing) of a band of a tendon over the outer bone (lateral condyle) of the knee. It is usually caused by the stress of long-term overuse, like long distance running, and manifests as an ache or burning sensation at the side of the knee during activity. Swelling is usually absent and knee motion is normal. <a class=\"fusion-modal-text-link\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.itb\" href=\"#\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treatment<\/span><\/strong><\/a><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-7 itb\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-7\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:#ebebeb;--awb-background:#f6f6f6;\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-sm\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-7\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITB)<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">Usually, ITB disappears if the person reduces activity and performs stretching exercises followed by muscle-strengthening exercises.
